Legacy Parks Foundation and Missy Kane of Covenant Health will be hitting the local trails every Thursday morning in June and July. Hikers will meet at 8:45 am (unless noted otherwise) and will start hiking at 9 am. Hikers need to bring water, a light snack and bug repellant. Hiking poles are optional. The Thompson Cancer Survival Center will provide free sun screen and info on cancer prevention. Some hikes are more strenuous then others — hikers should be in condition to hike 3-4 miles of trail.
June 5: Morningside Park - meet at the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center at 8:45 a.m. We'll do a 3-mile walk/hike on the James White Greenway and around Morningside Park. After the hike, Billy Lush Paddle Shop will give a Standup paddleboard demonstration then offer an optional hour Paddle board or canoe at half price! A second option is to bring your bike to ride along greenway after the hike. We need to know who will be participating in the paddling.
June 12: Knoxville Urban Wilderness - meet at Meads Quarry at 8:45 am for a 3-4 mile hike along the quarry Key Hole area then out Emery's trail and over to Marie Myers Park. Optional turn around here or continue to the end of Marie Myers and return. Longer version can continue or Burnett Ridge trail then back to cars for a 6-7-mile hike.
June 19: Sharps Ridge Memorial Park - meet at the end parking lot at 8:45 am to hike the new trails on Sharp's Ridge. This will be a 2-3 mile hike.
June 26: Fit Fun trip to Burgess Falls and Cummin Falls State Parks. Meet at the parking area of Panera Bread on Peters Road at 7:45 am to carpool. We will do a 1.5 mile hike at Burgess Falls then a 3-mile hike at Cummins Falls. Bring a lunch picnic to enjoy at the waterfall - swimming is optional! Additional gifts will be provided by Cumberland Medical Center.
July 3: Seven Islands State Birding Park - meet at the parking lot at 8:45 am. Seven Islands is now Tennessee's first State Birding Park! We will hike a 3-5 mile loop with a guide to tell us about all the various wildlife that make this area their home. Optional lunch at Tuckahoe Trading Post after the hike.
July 10: IC King Park - meet at the picnic area inside the park at 8:45. We will hike the lower river trail to the bridge and split into groups for those that want to hike the hilly loop or the relatively flat trails back. Bring a lunch to enjoy after the hike.
July 17: Knoxville Urban Wilderness - meet at Forks of the River Wildlife Management Area at 8:45 am. The sunflower fields should be in full bloom as we hike along the Will Skelton Greenway to see the sunflowers then along the trails heading back. Longer distance hikers can hike over to Burnett Creek parking area for a 5-mile hike.
July 24: Panther Creek State Park - meet at 8:45 at the parking area at the Cracker Barrel on Strawberry Plains exit of I-40 to carpool. We will hike 4-5 miles - option to bring lunch and swimsuits for afterwards. Additional gifts from Morristown Hamblen Medical.
Cost: $35 for the series of 8 hikes which includes a year membership with Friends of Legacy Parks, a performance t-shirt, sunscreen and Knoxville Urban Wilderness pocket-sized trail map. Single hikes are $10 per hike. Children under 12 are free.
