Outdoor KnoxFest 2014

Outdoor KnoxFest is two full days of Urban Adventure for everyone from outdoor enthusiast to those who simply love to get out and play. Adventurers can experience Knoxville from a bicycle seat, stand up paddle board, canoe, trail, climbing wall, slack line and more during Outdoor KnoxFest. It is produced by Legacy Parks Foundation, presented by Pilot Flying J and is a signature event of the Dogwood Arts Festival, a nationally renowned, month-long celebration of the natural and cultural beauty of East Tennessee. Find us on facebook at Outdoor KnoxFest

The Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center will be the hub for this year's mix of outdoor recreational venues that encourages people of all ages and levels of experience to participate. From guided trail rides, runs, hikes and paddles, the festival showcases Knoxville’s outdoor amenities with a special spotlight on the Urban Wilderness, a 1,000-acre urban playground only minutes from downtown. The many clinics offered will provide an opportunity to learn new skills or try out a new venue.

The event is produced by Legacy Parks Foundation, a Knoxville-based non-profit actively working to make East Tennessee a recreational destination of the Southeast. Thanks to our great team of partners, the two-day festival will feature the following events:


SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

New this year is the Mini Adventure Challenge taking place on Saturday. The Mini Adventure Challenge encourages kids and new adventurers of all ages to test their skills, discover new outdoor activities and be rewarded for accepting the challenge! Pick up your Challenge Card when you check in and let it guide you through the dozens of activities offered at Outdoor KnoxFest. Try your hand at 6 of the day’s activities and get a free water bottle. Try 10 and be entered in a drawing for great prizes. Challenge Cards will be available Saturday at registration tables at the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center and at the Outdoor KnoxFest booth on Market Square. All activities are free.

Saturday, April 26

8:00 a.m. Pre-ride Bike Check for the Pickel Road Rides meets at the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center
Cedar Bluff Cycles will be setup near the registration table offering free bike checks. Free

9:00 a.m. Pickel Road Rides start at the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center
The Smoky Mountain Wheelmen Bike Club will host a ride through the scenic backroads of East Tennessee ride with the option of 20, 40, and 60 mile routes. The ride honors Harry Pickel who is fondly remembered for his friendly greetings to all that journeyed by his store, the H & H Service Mart on Thorngrove Pike, established in 1895. All rides will start at 9 a.m. from the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center. Benefits the Legacy Parks Foundation.

9:00 a.m. Sailing Demo and Clinic meets at the Tower Dock at Volunteer Landing
Believe it or not, there is sailing on the Tennessee River! The Concord Yacht Club will take you on a tour of a beautiful 38-foot sailboat. Learn what it takes to raise a sail and travel by wind power alone from some of the most experienced sailors in Knoxville. Demo and yacht will be at the Tower Dock on Volunteer Landing below the pedestrian bridge. Free

10:00 a.m. Bike Maintenance Clinic at the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center
Enjoy coffee and bagels as the folks at Tennessee Valley Bikes demonstrate maintenance skills and tips for keeping your bikes in good working condition on the road or trail. The Appalachian Mountain Bike Club sponsors this event. Free

10:00 a.m. Divas Trail Ride meets at Meads Quarry
Enjoy the trails of the Urban Wilderness on this women’s only ride led by River Sports Outfitters and Tennessee Valley Bikes. This group ride is great for beginner and intermediate levels — no one will be left behind. Bring your own bike, or contact River Sports Outfitters by April 18 if you need a bike to ride. Riders need to wear a helmet, have water and eye protection.Ride will be approximately 1-2 hours depending on group. Meet at the Meads Quarry parking lot. Free

11:00 a.m. Fly Fishing Clinic at the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center
Tackle a few of the basic fly fishing skills as the experts at 3 Rivers Angler share their techniques on casting fundamentals and choosing the right gear. Free

11:00 a.m. Urban Wilderness Boulder Scramble starts at Meads Quarry
Scramble over the boulder fields and through the keyhole at Ross Marble Quarry, as you make your way to the old lime pit. Route will explore new trails with exceptional overviews. Discover the amazing diversity of Knoxville's Urban Wilderness with Sarah Brobst, naturalist with Ijams Nature Center. Be prepared to get dirty! Meets at Meads Quarry in Ijams Nature Center. Scramble wiill last approximately 2 hours. Free

11-4 p.m. Open Paddle at the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center
Join us for the opportunity to try out a variety of boats on the waterfront. You will be able to choose from canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and hydrobikes provided by Billy Lush Paddle Sports, River Sports Outfitters, UT Outdoor Program, and Norris Paddling Adventures. Check in at the Outdoor Adventure Center and the boats are just a short walk away. Free

11-4 p.m. Climbing Wall and Slacklines at the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center
Test your balance and strength while walking the slackline and try your hand at rock climbing on the wall. River Sports Outfitters will be set up in the upper parking lot for a chance to try these growing adventure sports. Free

11-4 p.m. Disc Golf Demo at the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center
Disc golf is a popular way to get out and enjoy the outdoors. The Innovation Valley Disc Golf Club will be set up with a portable basket to give you a chance to hone your skills at this fun and challenging activity. Free

11-4 p.m. Fly Fishing Demo at the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center
Join the staff from 3 Rivers Angler and try your hand at the art of fly fishing. Pick up one of their practice rods and let the instructors help you catch one of the varieties of fish from the area in Velcro form. Free

12:00 p.m. "First Time on the Trail" Mountain Bike Ride starts at Meads Quarry
Beginner riders will follow experienced members of the Appalachian Mountain Bike Club and Tennessee Valley Bikes to learn important bike handling skills for navigating the trails in Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness. A bike check will be offered at 11:30. Bring your own bike, or contact Tennessee Valley Bikes by April 18 if you need one. Riders need to wear a helmet, have water and eye protection. Riders will be out for approximately 1½ hours. Free

12:00 p.m. Greenway Bike Ride starts at the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center
Enjoy a relaxing ride along one of Knoxville’s many greenways. The Knoxville Bicycle Hospital will be leading a 6.5 mille round trip ride from the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center to Tyson Park and back. The ride will last approximately one hour and is a great way to experience one of our city’s most popular greenways. Free

1:00 p.m. Sailing Demo & Clinic meets at the Tower Dock at Volunteer Landing

Looking to get a GoPro, or you have one and would like some insight into best practices for capturing your life’s most exciting moments? Join REI’s GoPro experts for this class and Get to Know Your GoPro. Focus will be on the camera’s user interface, video capture, image settings, and accessories. Free

1:00 p.m. Hiking 101 Clinic meets at Meads Quarry
Join the staff from Blue Ridge Mountain Sports to learn the basics for trail time, including hiking gear, safety, nutrition, and general preparation for hiking trips. They will be presenting this popular clinic from their Mountain University program and will cover staff favorites for hiking areas in and around Knoxville as well as the 10 essentials needed to stay safe and comfortable on the trail. 2:00 p.m. Disc Golf Clinic at the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center
Disc golf is a sport that is growing quickly, and is a great way to get out and leave the stress of the day behind. Learn the necessary skills and techniques of this competitive sport from members of the Innovation Valley Disc Golf Club. This clinic is a good opportunity to learn the basics, fine tune your skills, or learn about courses in the area. Free

2:00 p.m. Urban Wilderness "Walk in the Woods" meets at Meads Quarry
Explore the unusual natural and man-made structures at Meads and Ross Marble Quarry at Ijams Nature Center, the heart of Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness. Stephen Lyn Bales, a naturalist with Ijams Nature Center, will lead the 2-hour hike. Free

2:00 p.m. Pre-ride Bike Check for Bikes & Blooms Scenic Bike Ride South at the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center
Tennessee Valley Bikes will be at the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center offering free bike checks. Mechanics will be setup an hour before the ride starts. Free

3:00 p.m. Southbound Bikes & Blooms Scenic Bike Ride leaves from the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center
Observe the beauty of the Dogwood Arts Trails from the seat of a bicycle as you ride from the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center to the colorful gardens that frame Island Home Boulevard. Riders will enjoy river views and tranquil forests as they continue on the greenway to Ijams Nature Center before returning. Tennessee Valley Bikes and Dogwood Arts Festival will lead this scenic 8-mile ride. Riders must wear helmets. Young riders must be skilled at on-road riding, suggested age 8 and up. Free

3:00 p.m. Women's Fly Fishing Clinic at the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center
Are you interested in trying fly-fishing? This women’s only clinic is your opportunity to tackle a few of the basic fly fishing skills as the experts at 3 Rivers Angler share their techniques on casting fundamentals and choosing the right gear. Free

4:00 p.m. Group Paddle on the River leaves from Calhoun's Dock
Delight in the beauty of Knoxville’s waterfront on a guided paddle that skirts the shoreline of the Tennessee River. The UT Outdoor Program, the City of Knoxville Aquatics, and River Sports Outfitters will be providing the boats and gear. Paddle will last approximately 2 hours. You may choose to bring your own boat or reserve a free kayak or canoe. Reservations can be made via email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . Due to the limited number of boats we will try to accommodate your request for kayak or canoe but we cannot guarantee it. Please limit your request to one reservation per email. Free

Sunday, April 27

9:00 a.m. Urban Wilderness Trail Run starts at Meads Quarry
The Knoxville Track Club has charted a scenic and adventuresome 4-mile loop through Knoxville's Urban Wilderness. Runners and walkers will start at Ijams Nature Center. Benefits the Legacy Parks Foundation.
Pre-register by Friday, April 18 for $25; day-of registration is $30. Register on Active.com

11-3 p.m. Mountain Bike Checkpoint Race meets at Meads Quarry
Teams of two will race between checkpoints on South Knoxville's trails, roads and greenways. There is no set route and the checkpoints will remain secret until the start of the event. Teams going for all check points should prepare for around 40 miles. Riders need to carry their own gear, food and water, as there are no sag vehicles or rest stops. Participants are required to burn a taillight when on roads. Be prepared for any circumstances you may encounter including, but not limited to: medical emergencies, navigational errors, inoperable equipment, wild animals, and stinging/poisonous insects and plants. Most of all have fun. Sponsored by Tennessee Valley Bikes and the Appalachian Mountain Bike Club. Tennessee Valley Bikes will be providing maps and prizes! All ages and skills are welcome. Teams must have a reliable digital camera so they can document the checkpoints! Benefits the Legacy Parks Foundation.

11:00 a.m. History Hike meets at the Augusta entrance to Fort Dickerson Park
Discover one of the best-preserved earthen forts from the Civil War era that rests on a knob just across the river from downtown! The exploration at Fort Dickerson Park will be led by Debbie Sharp from TREK South. Civil War historian, Dr. Joan Markel with the McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture, will share historical facts and features of the earthen forts within the Park. Meet at the lower parking lot for the Fort Dickerson Park Greenway, Augusta Avenue entrance. Hike will last approximately 2 hours. Free

2:00 p.m. Wildflower Hike meets at the Forks of the River Wildlife Management Area
Spring in East Tennessee is vibrant with color! Join guide Karen Fletcher and local wild flower experts as they highlighting the wildflowers in Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness. The hike will meet at the Burnett Creek Road parking area for Forks of the River (see right sidebar for directions) and will cover approximately 3 miles. Free

3:00 p.m. Northbound Bikes & Blooms Scenic Bike Ride leaves from the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center
Behold the colorful displays of our native dogwood trees that fringe our boulevards and gardens along the Dogwood Arts Trails. Leaving the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center, riders will ride through downtown and loop through historic neighborhoods in North Knoxville. This scenic 8-mile ride will be led by Tennessee Valley Bikes and Dogwood Arts Festival. Riders must wear helmets. Young riders must be skilled at on-road riding, suggested age is 8 and up. Free
