With downtown as a backdrop, this unique downtown park provides tennis and basketball courts along with play and picnic areas. Its a great place to escape the summer heat under one of the old shade trees. The Cal Johnson Recreation Center is adjacent to the park. Cal Johnson, for those that enjoy tidbits from history, was a prominent East Knoxvillian from the early 20th century who became the city's first black millionaire. Johnson gave generously to his community. He donated a house, in honor of his wife, on the corner of Vine Avenue and Patton Street to be the first black YMCA in Knoxville. Johnson served on the City’s Board of Aldermen from 1883-1885.
